Dr. George Melillos is an Associate Professor at the American University of Cyprus in Larnaca and an AI researcher based in Nicosia. Academic and research work
Dr. Melillos is an Associate Professor at the American University of Cyprus in Larnaca. At the Cyprus University of Technology he serves as a Special Teaching Scientist and as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, where his research covers artificial intelligence, remote sensing and space technologies.
His research applies AI and Big Data to maritime security. Since 2022 he has published work on deep learning (YOLO) for ship detection in satellite radar (SAR) imagery off the coast of Cyprus, presented through SPIE. From December 2022 to 2024 he was a researcher at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.

Teaching and training
He has taught at university level for more than 15 years, across the American University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology, the University of Nicosia, CBS College and the Cyprus Productivity Centre (KE.PA). Since 2000 he has delivered more than 70,000 hours of IT and AI training, and since the arrival of large language models he has trained more than 200 groups of professionals, executives and educators. He is an ANAD certified trainer.

AI governance and advisory practice
He works with organisations in Cyprus and Greece on the questions that come after the first AI pilot: who is accountable, which uses are high risk, how to document and control AI systems, and how to show this to auditors, clients and regulators. His work covers ISO/IEC 42001 AI management systems, EU AI Act readiness, AI policies and risk assessment, AI strategy and Chief AI Officer (CAIO) advisory.

Public sector leadership
Before moving into research and advisory work, he spent about 20 years at the Cyprus Ministry of Defence, where he was IT Director until November 2022. He was responsible for technology strategy, procurement and vendor management, information security and organisation-wide change. That experience shapes his advisory work today: he has managed the budgets, the risks and the people involved in real transformation, not only the theory.
